Cox Bay is one of Tofino’s defining surf settings. Come for a lesson, a long look at the breakers, or a stay with the ocean close by.

A beach built around surf

The bay’s open-Pacific setting is part of its appeal and part of the reason to respect conditions. A popular surf beach is not automatically suitable for a beginner on a particular day. Arrange local instruction and let the instructor choose the session location.

Access and parking

Use a signed public entry and follow the current parking rules. Check your planned access before setting off rather than assuming you can cross resort grounds. Allow time to carry boards and gear from your parking or drop-off point.

Enjoy the view safely

Enjoy the beach from a safe distance when swell is large. Keep away from wave-washed rocks and movable logs. This guide does not route visitors onto informal lookout scrambles; stay with established open access and local guidance.

Stay near the waves

Beachfront accommodation can simplify a surf-focused stay. Pacific Sands and Long Beach Lodge are examples to compare through the accommodation guide. Check the actual room location, beach access and included amenities before reserving.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cox Bay good for beginner surfers?

Cox Bay often has the biggest waves in Tofino, so beginners should surf here only with an instructor who chooses suitable conditions.

Can you swim at Cox Bay?

There are no lifeguards and the undertow can be strong. Treat the beach as a place to walk, surf with instruction and watch waves.
