Start with a guided paddle
A guided trip is a useful introduction for visitors unfamiliar with these waters. Ask about required experience, group size, kayak style and how the operator chooses a route. Calm-looking water beside the dock is not a forecast for the whole trip.
Choose your time on the water
A short introductory outing leaves room for lunch and a town walk. A longer trip needs more stamina and a bigger weather window. Confirm whether shore landings are included and what physical demands to expect when getting in and out of the boat.
Pack for a cool coast
Ask what protective equipment and clothing are provided. Bring the layers and footwear your guide recommends, and keep a dry change of clothes for afterwards. Protect phones and cameras in suitable waterproof storage.
Respect the places you visit
Shorelines and islands are not all unrestricted visitor destinations. Follow your guide’s access arrangements and respect local stewardship requirements. Read responsible travel and leave wildlife undisturbed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need experience to kayak in Tofino?
Not for a guided introductory tour. Unguided paddling in Clayoquot Sound requires experience with tides, currents, wind and harbour traffic.
Can you kayak to Meares Island?
Guided tours often visit Meares Island. It is a Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Park, so follow your guide’s access arrangements.
