Walk to the beach from town
The Tonquin Trail starts at the Tofino Community Hall, an easy walk from the town centre, or you can use the closer trailhead at the end of Tonquin Park Road. The District lists the route at 3 km plus 800 m of boardwalk and stairs, on moderate gravel. Expect some steep sections, and allow daylight for the walk back through the trees.
On the trail
The trail runs through old-growth forest to Tonquin Beach, then continues south to Third Beach and Middle Beach, with boardwalk lookouts over the water along the way. The beach takes its name from the trading ship Tonquin, destroyed in Clayoquot Sound in 1811. For a longer outing, add the Rainforest Trail and other walks in the national park on another day.
Sunset over Clayoquot Sound
Tonquin faces west across the water, so the evening light can be beautiful. Bring a headlamp if you stay for sunset, because the return is through forest and up stairs. The cove is more sheltered than the open surf beaches, but there are still no lifeguards and conditions change with the tide.
Plan your visit
Washrooms are at the Community Hall and Tonquin Park Road trailheads. District beach pay parking applies at Tonquin Park Road from 8 am to 11 pm, beach fires are not allowed, and dogs must be on leash. Pair the walk with dinner in town, or compare it with the calmer water at tinwis.
