A calmer Tofino beach
The water here is typically calmer than on Tofino’s open surf beaches, which makes tinwis a favourite for families, paddling at the water’s edge and easy evening walks. Calm does not mean supervised: there are no lifeguards, and swell and tide still change the beach. Keep children close and read Tofino with kids for more ideas.
Access, parking and facilities
Public access is from Hellesen Drive and MacKenzie Beach Road, both with public washrooms and showers. The Hellesen Drive access has an entrance ramp and a Mobi-Mat. District beach pay parking applies, and you can also reach the beach on the multi-use path. Beach fires are allowed subject to current restrictions, and dogs must be on leash.
The name and its history
tinwis means calm beach or calm waters in the Tla-o-qui-aht language. The BC Geographical Names Office made the name official on May 15, 2025, at the request of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation. The site was a Tla-o-qui-aht village, and later the location of Christie Indian Residential School after it moved from Meares Island in 1971. Visit with that history in mind and read responsible travel.
Staying at tinwis
Several properties sit on or beside the beach, including Ocean Village Resort’s cabins on Hellesen Drive, Tin Wis Resort and Bella Pacifica Campground. Compare them in where to stay and camping, and confirm whether your unit has direct beach access.
