What winter is like
Expect rain, wind and short days, with the biggest storms of the year. The ocean stays around 7–14°C year-round, so surfing continues in thick wetsuits. Some businesses change their hours or close for part of the season, so check opening information before you plan a day around one place.
Things to do in winter
Watch the swell from a safe vantage point (see storm watching), surf with a lesson in winter conditions, walk the rainforest trails on calmer days, and fill wet afternoons with galleries, spas and cafés. Whale-watching season starts again in late winter, and the Pacific Rim Whale Festival is held in March, timed to the grey whale migration.
Driving here in winter
Winter tires or carried chains are required on Highway 4 from October 1 to March 31. Check DriveBC before you leave and again before you head home, especially for the mountain section between Port Alberni and the coast, and allow extra time. Read getting to Tofino for ferry and flight options.
Where to stay and what to pack
Choose accommodation you will enjoy being inside: an ocean view, a fireplace or a kitchen makes a stormy day easy. Green Point Campground is closed in winter, and the ʔapsčiik t̓ašii pathway is not maintained. Pack waterproof layers, rain boots and a warm hat. Downtown pay parking is off from November 1 to April 30, but beach pay parking runs all year.
